How footloose are renters?

In this short speed read article, we look at the distances tenants moved home in 2020 during the pandemic

26% of tenants moved within a mile of their previous rental property in 2020, and over two thirds (69%) stayed within ten miles.
As renting is more flexible than ownership, some households use it as an opportunity to get to know a new area. In fact, 27% of tenants moved more than 10 miles in 2020.
The number of tenants moving more than 10 miles reduced by 6% in 2020 compared to 2019, perhaps reflecting a preference to stay close to friends, families and established neighbours during the pandemic.
5% of tenants in England and Wales moved from overseas. London is the most popular region, with 10% moving from overseas in 2020.
